Thüringen Philharmonie Gotha follows up on the tradition of more than 360 years of the former residential ensemble of the town of Gotha. The roots of the orchestra go back to the foundation of the Court Band in 1651. After the dissolution of the duchy in 1918 the name Court Band was changed to Provincial Band. Many notable musicians are connected with the band, for example, Georg Anton Benda, Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel and Louis Spohr, Polish violin virtuoso Henryk Wieniawski, conductors Ferenc Liszt, Hector Berlioz and Richard Strauss. After World War II in 1951 the name changed to the Provincial Symphony Orchestra Thüringen Gotha. In 1998 it got the name Thüringen Philharmonie Gotha-Suhl and since 2009 it has been called Thüringen Philharmonie Gotha.
